Al Gunn Montreal, QC Death:former bass player for Men Without Hats Has passed Away
The Montreal music scene has lost one of its most vibrant and foundational characters with the passing of Al Gunn, the former bassist for the iconic band Men Without Hats. Known offstage as Alain Lefebvre, Gunn was a larger-than-life personality whose legacy extends far beyond the synth-pop hit “The Safety Dance.”
For many, he was immortalized in the lyrics of Men Without Hats’ other major hit, “Pop Goes The World,” with the playful line, “Send Al Gunn to see the doctor BEN!”—a testament to his integral and beloved role within the band’s circle. More than a musician, Gunn was a childhood friend to many and a loyal supporter of the local arts community.

His profound impact was perhaps most deeply felt at his renowned repair shop, The Guitar Hospital. As a master luthier, Al Gunn became the trusted craftsman for several generations of Montreal guitarists, lovingly maintaining the instruments that shaped the city’s sound. His skilled hands and keen ear were essential services behind the scenes, making him a silent pillar of countless careers and recordings.
Al Gunn’s passing marks the end of an era. He was a direct link to Montreal’s musical golden age, a talented artist, and a cherished friend. While his booming presence will be sorely missed, his rhythm lives on in the music he helped create and in the well-tuned guitars of a grateful city. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life.
