The football community is mourning the loss of former professional cornerback Chris Payton-Jones, who tragically passed away on April 12th from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. He was 29 years old.
Payton-Jones, a Jacksonville native and Sandalwood High School standout, built a resilient seven-year professional career that spanned the NFL, XFL, and UFL. Most recently, he was a member of the St. Louis Battlehawks for the 2024 and 2025 UFL seasons, following a stint with the Seattle Sea Dragons in the 2023 XFL. He had announced his retirement this past January.
His professional journey was a testament to perseverance. After a productive collegiate career at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors, he entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Payton-Jones went on to play for six NFL teams: the Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Las Vegas Raiders. Across his NFL tenure, he was valued for his disciplined coverage, sure tackling, and dedicated special teams play, amassing 48 career tackles and seven pass deflections.

Teammates and coaches with the Sea Dragons and Battlehawks remembered him as a vital mentor in the locker room and a consummate professional whose work ethic set the standard. Even after being placed on injured reserve in 2025, he remained engaged in team and community activities.
Off the field, Payton-Jones was known for his quiet generosity, frequently returning to Jacksonville to mentor high school athletes and support youth sports programs. Coaches universally described him as a favorite—a player whose film-room intensity was matched only by his willingness to lift up those around him.
His sudden passing cuts short a life dedicated to football and community. The career of Chris Payton-Jones, marked by constant adaptation and unwavering resolve, reflected the true grit of a professional athlete. He is remembered not just for his plays on the field, but for his character and impact off it.
